The Lake Forest boys swimming team emerged with the championship plaque at the Vernon Hills Sectional Saturday, totaling 263 points to squeak past second-place Libertyville (256 points) on a day when six pool records fell.

Warren (239) was not far behind in third place.

Leading the way to state-meet qualification for the Scouts was Peter Grumhaus, who finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 40.61 seconds) and the 500 free (pool-record 4:35.31). The senior also helped Lake Forest’s 400 free relay (with senior Colin Rowe, sophomore Daniel Smith and senior Bogdan Balteanu) win in a pool-record 3:08.70.

Rowe also placed second in the 100 free (47.53), and helped the 200 medley relay (with Smith, Balteanu and Grumhaus) finish second in 1:35.82.

The first two finishers in each event automatically qualified for the state meet.

The boys stuck together like glue all season, and it showed today in sectionals,” Lake Forest coach Cindy Dell said.

Rowe agreed that the Scouts’ success was the result of a team effort.

“We’ve been busting our butts all season,” he said. “We unite together, and that’s what counts.”

Mundelein’s Connor Black broke two pool records, winning the 50 free in 20.43 and the 100 fly in 49.29. Libertyville’s Alex Snarski’s 50.04 in the 100 back broke a pool record previously held by Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers. Lakes’ Kyle Aerne holds the pool record in the 100 back after winning in 56.74.
