Carmel didn’t not win a fourth consecutive team state girls gymnastics title, but this still was a very successful season for the Corsairs.
In a thrilling finish in the all-around competition, Carmel senior Lauren Feely outlasted Prairie Ridge’s Rachael Underwood and Lyons’ Kelsy Kurfirst to win the state title at the meet held at Palatine High School.
Feeley had a score of 38.7. Underwood and Kurfirst both finished with a score of 38.55.
There was much intrigue in the final rotation, and it came down to Feeley and Kurfirst. Going first in the vault, Feeley received a score of 9.9, best on the night. Going last in the uneven bars, Kurfirst needed a score of 9.775 to win. She scored 9.625.
“I was watching and it was a great routine. I was going, ‘Oh,’ ” Feeley said of Kurfirst’s bars routine. “My coach was crunching the numbers so I knew (I’d won). It was amazing. I’ve worked so hard these past few years. I’m so happy it all came together.”
The top 10 gymnasts in each individual event qualified for Saturday’s final round and Feely won state titles on vault (99.825) and bars (9.625) to finish her three-year varsity career with 12 state medals. She was second on beam and floor.
Stevenson sophomore Alyssa Weisberg scored 9.525 to take first on beam.
“I was so happy with my dismount,” Weisberg said. “I’ve been trying to get it all year and it hasn’t worked and finally this was the moment to stick it. It was a great feeling.”
Sarah Cohen-Smith of Carmel was fifth in vault and Alli Tran of Vernon Hills took sixth.
Kat McKeon of Lake Forest was fifth on bars and Stevenson’s Riley Trebilco was sixth on beam.
Kylie Carlson of Lake Forest took third on floor.
