Snowshoe team dominates at state competition

The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County qualified nine members for the snowshoe competition at the State Winter Games in Galena, and several SRACLC members brought home gold medals from the Games.
To qualify for state, an athlete had to win an event at the district qualifier.
The snowshoers competed in races ranging from 50 meters to 1,600 meters and there also was a 400-meter relay.
On the first day of the tournament, the SRACLC Crusaders relay team of Brittany Nippes, Erik Anderson, Katie Millar, and Chris Walti took gold.
On the following day, while running in blizzard conditions, Kyle Tuckey competed in an 800-meter (half-mile) and a 1,600-meter (one-mile) race and won both
Mitchel Glazer also won his division of the 800.
The third day of competition was filled with many more races for SRACLC athletes. Millar rounded out the tournament with a pair of silver medals for the 100 and 200. Tammy Busch took second in the 200, and Anderson was second in the 50.
Overall, the SRACLC team won gold in four race, silver in five races, and bronze in three races..
“Coming home from Winter Games with nine medalists was an exceptional way to finish our very successful snowshoeing season,” said Kelly Weber, SRACLC Special Olympics coordinator.
The SRACLC has athletes from the central part of Lake County, including the Grayslake, Vernon Hills, Libertyville areas.
