Vernon Hills wins sectional title

Meri Bennett-Swanson scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead host Vernon Hills to a solid 42-30 win over Regina Dominican in the finals of the 3A sectional at Vernon Hills.
The Cougars’ next game will in the Round of 8 at Hoffman Estates High School at 7:30 Monday night against Burlington Central.
Burlington is 27-4 on the season and won its sectional by blasting Sterling 49-26 on Thursday.
During late December, Burlington beat North Chicago 53-44. Vernon Hills smashed North Chicago twice by big margins.
Vernon Hills finished second in last year’s state tournament, losing to Montini in the finals.
This year, Montini would be waiting for the Cougars in the semifinals at Redbird Arena in downstate normal.
Alina Lehocky had a nice game for the winners on Thursday, scoring eight points and grabbing a career-high rebounds.
The game blew open in the third quarter when Vernon Hills went on a 10-0 run.
The first half ended 20-16, with the Cougars shooting 9-of-27 from the field and Regina 7-of-32.
