The ever-growing sports of cheerleading and poms/dance have a new outlet, with “Cheer & Dance Xtreme” now getting started in the Gurnee area.
The program is headed by Jill Franz, the highly regarded poms/dance coach at Waukegan High School, She’s teaming with Stacey McKie, who put Waukegan High on the state cheerleading map as their coach before leaving that spot to take on this new venture.
Cheer & Dance Xtreme will belong to the Illinois Recreational Cheerleading Association and will compete in IRCA-sanctioned cheer and dance events.
This program is open to girls and boys age 5-18 and there are teams based on age and experience. For a guideline, ages for teams are based on school grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and high school.
The season runs from the end of July thru the first week of December, and registration is this Sunday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Suzy Swirl’s in Gurnee.
Suzy’s is located as on out-lot from Gurnee Mills. It’s on the north side of Route 132 and in the same building as the Five Guys burgers/fries/peanuts-in-a-shell place. Suzy’s specializes in healthy desserts.
The cost to register for Cheer & Dance Xtreme is $30, and to be on a team for the season is $275. There are additional costs for tumbling classes, and other stuff like shoes and bows, etc.
The program Web site is www.cheerdancextreme.com and the email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
The IRCA is the association that almost all area cheer and dance programs belong to. Practices tentatively are scheduled for outside at Woodland Middle School during the summer and inside at Hinkston Park in Waukegan in the fall.
