Gurnee’s Legion baseball team won the West Division title this summer in the 10th District League, but the Riverdogs couldn’t beat their own alumni in an annual game that was played recently at Legion Field (Routes 31 and 132) in Gurnee.

“This is a special day for the Riverdogs, where we have a bunch of former players come back and challenge the existing Riverdogs to a game,” said Gurnee coach Steve Huisel.

This was the third year for the alumni game and the third year that the alumni won, this time 7-5.

Game MVP was Warren High School grad John Frericks, who now plays baseball at Illinois Wesleyan. He was 2-for-3 batting with a pair of doubles. Picking up the win was Zach Schneider, who pitched at Warren and now pitches at Webster University in St. Louis.

Some of the other alumni who played were Dan Ridel (Lakes High School grad), Jon Frericks Mario Perez (Warren/Carthage), Mark Maretti (Warren), Jon Huisel (Carmel/Wooster), Bill Fell (Lakes/Rockford College), Mark Lavery (Warren), and Jason Seveska (Warren).

All told, there were more than 20 Riverdog alums on hand.

The next event for the Legion baseball team will be a golf outing next spring.
