The second round of the playoffs in the Chicagoland Youth Football League will be held this weekend, with winners advancing to play for Division championships the following weekend.

The main event in the Heavyweight Division will be a Saturday rematch between Zion-Benton and Waukegan. The teams will play at the Grayslake Aquatic Center.

So far this season, Waukegan has been dominant at this level, outscoring its nine opponents not named Zion-Benton by a ridiculous 314-14 total.

But when Waukegan and Zion-Benton squared off during the regular season, the Chiefs prevailed by only 18-16 — a result that assured a 10-0 record for Waukegan while it was Zion’s only loss. Adding fuel to the matchup is the fact that one of Waukegan’s top players reportedly lives in the Zion area and attends Central Junior High in Zion.

In the CYFL, there are three divisions for each weight class, and the division champions do not play each other. Hence, Waukegan could finish the year 12-0 and not get a crack a the Buffalo Grove Bills’ Heavyweight Division team that also is headed for 12-0.

There is no way for the league powers to meet after the playoffs end because Buffalo Grove is headed to Florida to play in a Football Jamboree over Thanksgiving.

Between the Heavyweight (generally, eighth-graders) and Lightweight (generall, seventh-graders) divisions, eight area youth grid programs are still in the playoff hunt.

Waukegan, Grant and Lake Villa have teams playing this weekend in both divisions while Mundelein, Grayslake, Libertyville, Wauconda and Zion-Benton each have one of two teams in the title hunt.
