Grant thrower is area’s best hope at state meet
PREP BOYS TRACK: The best high-school boys basketball in Lake County is played at schools east of the tollway. But if you’re looking for the area athletes with the best chance of winning a state title in boys track this weekend, you need to look to the west.

PREP GIRLS TRACK: Friday is position day at the state girls track meet. You can’t win anything on Friday, but athletes need to perform well enough during the preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston to be in position to run/jump/throw for state titles on Saturday.

PREP SOFTBALL: Warren High School’s softball team made sure retiring coach Carri McGahon went out a winner. With Tuesday’s 8-0 thumping of Zion-Benton, th Blue Devils virtually assured themselves of representing the Lake Division in the North Suburban Conference Championship Game for the first time in the 12-year history of division play in the league.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: In just 15 words Tuesday night, Warren School District Superintendent Dr. Philip Sobocinski accurately summed up the hiring of Ryan Webber as the Blue Devils’ varsity boys basketball coach: “You have big shoes to fill, but I’m sure you’ll be up to the challenge.”
Lake Forest standout to play at St. Ambrose
Thomas Durrett, the best player on Lake Forest High School’s boys basketball team last winter, will play next year at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

PREP BOYS TRACK: Grant hurdler Sean (pronounced “Scene”) Wells was the only double-winner and host Deerfield went home from the Lake County Boys Track Meet with the team trophy on Friday night.
Deerfield’s Brown always has his head in the game
Jason Brown is a thinking man, and on the tennis court, that can sometimes be a hindrance. The Deerfield High School senior player is learning to balance his game between the mental and physical side as he tries to improved on back-to-back third-place finishes at the state tourney.
